Defect: Altec Industries Inc. (Altec) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 DC1317 wood chippers manufactured September 1, 2011, to July 14, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the fasteners that attach the chipper cutting disc bearing to the unit may fail and the chipper disc may detach.
Risk: If the disc detaches within the housing, there is an increased risk of injury to the operator or those nearby.
Fix: Altec has notified owners, and dealers will replace the disc bearing mounting bolts, free of charge. The recall began on October 29, 2014. Owners may contact Altec customer service at 1-877-462-5832. Altec's number for this recall is CSN 604.
Service bulletins (2)
Technical service bulletins are repair instructions manufacturers send dealers for known issues. Unlike recalls, the fix is not automatically free — but naming the bulletin at the service desk can save diagnosis time and support goodwill repairs.
